Architizer A+ Relevance Award Winner Iwan Baan
Honored with the Architizer A+ Relevance Award, presented by New Museum director Lisa Phillips, Iwan Baan is among the most talented architectural photographers working today. His art lies not only in capturing the building as an object, or in mastering composition, but also in capturing the urban context and human life both within and beyond his subjects' walls. He shows architecture as most people see it, transcendent but also in touch with day-to-day life.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy Iwan Baan chartered the sole helicopter to take off that night and shot this cover of New York without power.
We are thrilled that the
MoMA decided to make the now iconic image into a large-scale poster, measuring 42 inches high by 30 inches wide. All proceeds of the poster will be donated to the
Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City to support Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.
"Iwan Baan's powerful and now iconic image bought to life one of the many devastating effects our City experienced in the aftermath Hurricane Sandy," said Mayor Bloomberg.
"We are grateful to the Museum of Modern Art for their solidarity and support of the many New Yorkers whose lives have been turned upside down by this storm. Their generous contribution to the Mayor's Fund will go a long way towards helping our recovery."
You can order the poster
here online at the MoMA Store and at any MoMA store worldwide.

Torre David, a 45-story skyscraper in Caracas, has remained uncompleted since the Venezuelan economy collapsed in 1994. Today, it is the improvised home to more than 750 families living in an extra-legal and tenuous squat, that some have called a 'vertical slum.'
Urban-Think Tank, the authors of Torre David: Informal Vertical Communities, spent a year studying the physical and social organization of this ruin-become home. Richly illustrated with photographs by Iwan Baan, the book documents the residents' occupation of the tower and how, in the absence of formal infrastructure, they organize themselves to provide for daily needs, with a hair salon, a gym, grocery shops, and more. The authors of this thought-provoking work investigate informal vertical communities and the architecture that supports them and issue a call for action: to see in informal settlements a potential for innovation and experimentation, with the goal of putting design in service to a more equitable and sustainable future.

Today a new type of museum is emerging-one that fuses inventive architecture and landscape design with radical conceptual and installation art. These sites typically mix old and new, featuring collaborative plans by several designers and encouraging exploration outdoors. White Cube, Green Maze: New Art Landscapes presents six such sites from around the globe: The Olympic Sculpture Park (USA); Stiftung Insel Hombroich (Germany); Benesse Art Site Naoshima (Japan); Instituto Inhotim (Brazil); Jardin Botanico de Culiacan (Mexico); and Grand Traiano Art Complex (Italy). The exhibition includes models and drawings by architects and landscape architects (see list below). Renowned photographer Iwan Baan has photographed all six sites for the exhibition and for the catalogue, which also features texts by Raymund Ryan, Brian O'Doherty and Marc Treib.
A Conversation with Photographer Iwan Baan
Where Is Iwan?
September 21, 2012 6:30 pm - Carnegie Museum of Art Theater
Spanning four continents and six countries, this book introduces "new art landscapes" that fuse architecture, the reuse of found structures, environmentalism, and artistic experimentation. Through words and pictures, readers explore six institutions - Olympic Sculpture Park, Seattle, USA; Raketenstation Hombroich, near Neuss, Germany; Benesse Art Site in Naoshima, Japan; Inhotim, near Belo Horizonte, Brazil; Jardin Botanico, Culiacan, Mexico; and Grand Traiano Art Complex, Grottaferrata, Italy - dedicated to the experience of culture and nature. Integrating vegetation and non-linear sequences of spaces, the sites offer multiple experiences enticing the visitor to circulate between and within buildings.
Iwan Baan, one of today's most influential architectural photographers, thoughtfully documents each project. In addition to his stunning images, the sites are depicted with architects' plans and sketches, historical photographs, and maquettes and sketches by key installation artists. Raymund Ryan's insightful essay discusses important historical precedents and considers the defining characteristics of "new art landscapes" through descriptions of each of the projects. Brian O'Doherty offers an artist's critical perspective, while Marc Treib situates the projects in the history of landscape design Architects under consideration include such established masters as Tadao Ando and Alvaro Siza Vieira as well as emerging practices such as Tatiana Bilbao and Johnston Marklee.

The Golden Lion for the Best Project embodying the theme of Common Ground goes to Torre David / Gran Horizonte by Urban-Think Tank (Alfredo Brillenbourg, Hubert Klumpner) Justin McGuirk, Iwan Baan and to the people of Caracas and their families who created a new community and a home out of an abandoned and unfinished building.
The jury praised the architects for recognizing the power of this transformational project. An informal community created a new home and a new identity by occupying Torre David and did so with flair and conviction. This initiative can be seen as an inspirational model acknowledging the strength of informal societies.

Just released, the book with a visual tour through contemporary life in both cities, With commentary in the form of an essay by Cees Nooteboom on the photographs and by Martino Stierli on the architectural and planning history.
In 1960, Brasilia was celebrated as the realisation of an urban planning vision based on designs by Lucio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer. At the same time, the sectoral city of Chandigarh was rising according to plans by Le Corbusier. "The test tube city" arose as an export of modernity from a Western planning euphoria that displayed utopian traits. In both cities, foreign architecture entered into a harmonious relationship with indigenous culture, forming new and independent identities. This publication addresses the question of how modernism has been appropriated in both cities, and how the people who live in them deal with it. Commonalities and differences are identified and images of everyday urban life showcased.

Steven Holl has set up a documentation centre for the Norwegian author Knut Hamsun (1859 - 1952) on Hamaroy, in northern Norway. This unconventional building reflects the author's no less unusual personality. The centre in the barren landscape of Hamaroy, where Hamsun lived and worked, the silence and solitude, challenge visitors to involve themselves with him and his work. The book records the connection between Hamsun, the architecture and the landscape. Photographer Iwan Baan relates the landscape and the building to each other, and historical documents illustrate Hamsun's contradictory life and influential work, et al. the novel Hunger (1890), with which Hamsun achieved his fame. In 1920 the poet was awarded with the Nobel Prize for Literature.

My images will appear in the upcoming exhibition at the MoMA in New York, titled Small Scale, Big Change: New Architectures of Social Engagement. Organized by Andres Lepik, Curator, and Margot Weller, Curatorial Assistant in the Department of Architecture and Design, the exhibition presents eleven architectural projects on five continents that respond to localized needs in underserved communities. I documented three intricate, inspiring and beautiful projects located in vastly different contexts: Michael Maltzan's Inner-City Arts in Los Angeles, Noero Wolff's Museum of Struggle in Port Elizabeth, South Africa and Urban Think Tank's Metro Cable in Caracas, Venezuela. The projects expressed a deep interconnection to community and place, making them a joy to document. The exhibition opens October 3 and runs through January 3, 2011.

Richard Neutra in Europe
Buildings and projects 1960 - 1970
From May 8-August 1, 2010, the exhibition Richard Neutra in Europe runs at the MARTa Herford Museum in Germany. Richard Neutra is one of the noted architects of the 20th Century, most-known for his mid-century modern villas in California. However his final creative years spent in Europe have been less studied. Last year, Iwan Baan documented all of Neutra's projects in Europe, focusing on how the projects are being used by people today. The exhibition shows many buildings that had never before been documented, including the Pescher House in Wuppertal, created five years before the architect's death in the same city. The exhibition of photographs and architecture models shape a greater understanding of Neutra's cumulative vision in both completed and unrealized projects.
The exhibition will travel next to the Swiss Architecture Museum in Basel.
