Last fall, Houston’s Rice University opened the Susan and Fayez Sarofim Hall, a 94,000-square-foot visual and performing arts hub designed by New York firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R). The new purpose-built structure, the form of which evokes the pre-engineered steel-framed “Butler buildings” that are ubiquitous across South Texas, occupies the site of and pays homage to the university’s storied “Art Barn.”
