Teshima Museum, Japan – Ruye Nishizawa
Perched on a hillside overlooking the Seto Inland Sea, the Teshima Art Museum is a poetic fusion of architecture and art. Designed by architect Ryue Nishizawa and artist Rei Naito for the Setouchi International Art Festival, the museum features a seamless 25cm-thick concrete shell, gently curving like a water droplet on the land.
Two large elliptical openings in the roof expose the interior to wind, light, and rain, creating a space that blurs the boundary between nature and structure. Without columns or conventional walls, the open gallery invites quiet contemplation, making the viewer deeply aware of time, presence, and the surrounding landscape.
