Sydney Modern, the Art Gallery of New South Wales extension by SANAA, reimagines the museum as a loose constellation of light pavilions that follow the hillside and frame the surrounding landscape. The project adds new galleries, learning spaces, and public amenities while opening the site to the Royal Botanic Garden and Woolloomooloo Bay. A central open court binds the historic museum and the new structures, creating a gentle sequence of terraces and outdoor rooms. Below ground, a former World War II fuel tank becomes a vast gallery for large-scale works, extending the museum into the earth as lightly as the pavilions touch the ground above.
