Situated in the resilient community of Mãe Luiza in Natal, Brazil, this gymnasium project reflects both the area’s unique natural setting and the strength of its people. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron in close collaboration with locals, the project responds directly to the community’s needs—offering a space for sports, gathering, and empowerment.
Rather than imposing a new identity, the gym is woven into the existing urban fabric, revitalizing an underused site and reinforcing the vibrant character of the neighborhood. It is an architecture of respect, inclusion, and continuity—anchored in place and community.
