Designed by Sou Fujimoto Architects, the Maruhon Makiart Terrace – Ishinomaki Cultural Center stands as a powerful symbol of recovery for the city of Ishinomaki following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The building unfolds along a narrow 170-meter-long lobby that links an auditorium, public galleries, learning spaces, and exhibition areas in a gentle linear sequence that shifts to maintain an intimate, human scale.
Composed of clustered volumes resembling small houses with pitched roofs, the architecture evokes familiarity and community. Chimney-like forms bring natural light and ventilation deep into the interiors, reinforcing a sense of openness and care. More than a cultural venue, the center acts as a civic living room, supporting social connection, creativity, and collective healing.
