Designed by Francis Kéré and Kéré Architecture, the Kamwokya Community Centre in Kampala, Uganda, blends local materials, passive design, and community-driven planning. The centre is built on a raised platform with an integrated drainage system to protect against flooding, and features subtle level changes that define areas for simultaneous activities like sports, workshops, and gatherings.
A shaded central sports field is surrounded by terraced seating, while two butterfly-roofed pavilions house a gym, internet café, classrooms, and music studios. The structure uses brick, wood, and steel, prioritizing natural ventilation and daylight. The architecture emphasizes openness, flexibility, and dignity—offering a functional, inspiring spacerooted in the everyday lives of its users.
