Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the M+ building in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District is a landmark museum for contemporary visual culture in Asia, encompassing visual art, design, architecture, moving image, and Hong Kong’s own cultural history. Positioned along Victoria Harbour, the building features a striking composition of horizontal podium and vertical tower, inspired by Hong Kong’s dense urban typologies.
Constructed above existing rail tunnels, the design incorporates a dramatic “found space” created by excavation around the infrastructure, now used for installations. The structure’s ceramic-tiled concrete façade reflects shifting light and contrasts with the surrounding glass towers, while the LED-clad tower projects museum content into the city’s nightscape. M+ is both a cultural destination and a powerful architectural statement deeply rooted in its local context.
