Situated prominently along the East River waterfront, the Queens Public Library at Hunters Point stands as a civic beacon amid a landscape of luxury residential towers. Designed by Steven Holl Architects, the 22,000-square-foot building occupies a modest footprint on its 32,000-square-foot site, preserving ample green space and integrating seamlessly with the adjacent public park.
In contrast to the trend of embedding libraries within private developments, the building asserts its independence as a standalone public institution. Sculptural in form, the concrete structure opens dynamically to the city and river through carved-out reading bays and strategically placed windows, framing views and inviting light deep into the interior.
