Designed by OPEN Architecture, the Sun Tower is a striking oceanfront cultural center in Yantai, China, featuring an outdoor theater, digital exhibition spaces, a library, and a semi-outdoor “Phenomena Space” at its peak. Rooted in Yantai’s ancient sun-worshiping history, the tower is conceived to celebrate natural phenomena and rekindle a spiritual connection with nature, while also providing vital civic and environmental functions for the growing urban district.
The building’s geometry is precisely aligned with solar events: its outer shell parallels equinox sunlight, the theater faces summer solstice sunrise, the tunnel aligns with winter solstice sunset, and the circular roof responds to midday sun on the summer solstice. Through this poetic integration of architecture, astronomy, and landscape, the Sun Tower becomes both landmark and timekeeper, inspiring reflection on nature, community, and sustainability.
