The Tambacounda Maternity and Paediatric Hospital in eastern Senegal was designed by Manuel Herz in collaboration with the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation and Le Korsa. Situated in one of the country’s most underserved regions, the hospital extends a long-term effort to bring meaningful, human-centered infrastructure to rural communities.
The building’s sinuous, curving form responds to the intense climate, promoting cross-ventilation and shade, while its vibrant façade made from locally produced bricks reflects both functional clarity and a strong sense of place. Part of a wider network of social architecture—including THREAD and Fass School—the project merges Bauhaus influence with local material traditions, advancing the Albers Foundation’s mission of achieving “maximum effect with minimal means.”
More than a medical facility, the hospital stands as a model of context-sensitive design, combining healthcare delivery with architectural dignity and community integration.
