MoMA – Diller Scofidio Renfro
The MoMA expansion and renovation by DS+R redefines the museum’s role in the city, emphasizing openness, flexibility, and engagement. Central to the project is The Studio, a dynamic performance and programming space at the museum’s heart, intended to question, activate, and challenge the narratives of modern art in real time.
On the second floor, the Crown Creativity Lab, designed by Gensler, serves as an educational hub inviting visitors to explore evolving ideas of the past, present, and future through art. At street level, new free-entry galleries along an expanded ground floor connect MoMA directly to Midtown Manhattan, encouraging spontaneous encounters and increased public accessibility.
DS+R’s intervention includes a light-filled, double-height lobby that links West 53rd and 54th Streets, enhanced circulation pathways, and strategically placed resting areas—transforming the museum from a linear sequence of galleries into a more fluid, interconnected cultural landscape.
