Designed by Rem Koolhaas and OMA, the McCormick Tribune Campus Center at the Illinois Institute of Technology reimagines the role of a university hub within a historically significant modernist campus. Built directly beneath the elevated Green Line train tracks, the building boldly incorporates the surrounding urban infrastructure into its design.
A signature feature is the stainless steel tube that encloses a section of the overhead train, acoustically shielding the interior while turning a constraint into a striking architectural gesture. Inside, the plan is organized as a network of diagonal paths—desire lines traced from student circulation—dividing and defining the programmatic spaces within a transparent, low-slung structure.
