You want to know why I am the way I am? When I was 5, I had TB. We didn’t have a hospital, but the Christmas Seal boat came around, everybody lined up on the dock, and you got a chest X-ray. So I had to go away for a year, and I was in a sanatorium. For that whole year I never saw anyone in my family. I think I came out of that fully independent. The Fogo Island Arts Corporation is a contemporary art venue on Fogo island and Change Islands off the north-east coast of Newfoundland.
