Why Geoffrey Bawa is the Modernist You Need to Know Right Now | AD Middle East

Geoffrey Bawa (1919-2003) was one of the 20th century’s most important Asian architects, often described as the pioneer of the Tropical Modernist movement. Yet despite being hugely influential, he’s far from a household name – perhaps because most of his building projects were completed in his native Sri Lanka (although a handful also appear elsewhere in Asia, including India and Singapore).

Another key element of the show is a specially commissioned series of images of Bawa’s buildings by photographer Iwan Baan, which capture their lived-in quality. “With limited technology and resources, he created extraordinary encounters between nature and architecture,” says Baan. “That is why his work still matters today.”
