The women’s mosque, on the edge of Doha’s new Education City, is a dazzling, surprising and generous structure, and a calm contrast to its outscaled urban settingIt seems a little extraordinary that this might be the first purpose-built contemporary mosque in the Muslim world designed specifically for women, but that is the claim. And there is no doubt that this, the Al-Mujadilah Center and Mosque, is a contemporary place of worship. All the elements are here, but not necessarily in a familiar form. Designed by  Diller Scofidio + Renfro, it is a dazzling, surprising and generous structure which both reiterates and upends conventional notions of the language of the mosque.
