Broad Beach Residence – Michael Maltzan
Completed in 2020, the Broad Beach Residence by Michael Maltzan Architecture is defined by its tapered form, lifting from the ground and opening toward the Pacific horizon. Modest in its exterior expression, the house reveals a striking entry sequence framed by black and white geometric murals by Sol LeWitt, reflected in polished steel doors.
Designed to maximize ocean views, the residence acts as both a home and a gallery, with LeWitt’s wall drawings integrated throughout the interior. Chosen for their conceptual rigor and material resilience, the murals are well suited to the harsh coastal climate and can be re-executed if needed. Inside, sliding glass walls dissolve the boundary between living spaces and beach, while concrete floors and sculptural stairs anchor the architecture. The result is a refined dialogue between art, landscape, and domestic life, where the horizon becomes a constant presence.
