Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, The Shed is a transformative cultural venue at Hudson Yards, defined by its telescoping outer shell that glides on rails to adapt the building for multiple uses. When extended, the shell creates a 17,200-square-foot, light-, sound-, and climate-controlled performance hallcapable of hosting up to 3,000 visitors with flexible staging and rigging systems integrated into its operable ceiling.
When retracted, the shell nests over the base building, revealing a 19,500-square-foot public plaza designed for outdoor events, complete with power, lighting, and projection support. The kinetic architecture—drawing on the industrial language of gantry cranes and the High Line’s rail infrastructure—embodies a new model for cultural space: flexible, mobile, and open to experimentation.
