GSFC Housing – Balkrishna Doshi
Balkrishna Doshi (1927–2023) was a visionary Indian architect known for blending modernist principles with local traditions and social consciousness. His GSFC Housing (1964–1969) in Vadodara, Gujarat, exemplifies this approach—offering climate-responsive, affordable housing for workers within a thoughtfully planned township. Drawing on vernacular forms like courtyards, terraces, and shaded walkways, Doshi created a vibrant, human-scaled community that fostered social interaction and dignity in everyday living. The project remains a model for context-sensitive urban design rooted in Indian culture and environment.
