The Sendai Mediatheque is a groundbreaking cultural center designed by Toyo Ito, conceived as a transparent and open public space for media, art, and community interaction. Located in the heart of Sendai, the building reimagines the traditional library and gallery through an innovative structural system of vertical “tubes” that support floor slabs and circulate light, air, and people.
Ito’s vision was to dissolve the boundaries between structure, space, and program—achieving full visual transparency and a sense of fluid, uninterrupted continuity. The result is a luminous, adaptable space that fosters accessibility, creativity, and civic engagement—marking a significant moment in contemporary architecture.
