Za Koenji, designed by Toyo Ito, is a dynamic cultural hub in Tokyo’s Suginami district. Conceived as an open, inviting space for the community, the theatre hosts and supports a wide spectrum of artistic activities, from drama and dance to music and storytelling. Its distinctive sculptural form reflects its mission: a place where people of all ages can gather, participate, and experience the performing arts at the heart of everyday life.
“I would like to use architecture to create bonds between people who live in cities, and even use it to recover the communities that used to exist in every single city.” – Toyo Ito
